Summary

Explore a Pacific country through its distinct islands, local food traditions and communities, without assuming one experience represents them all.

Many places, not one island story

Get to know the specific island and community you plan to visit. Vanuatu’s cultures should not be flattened into a single generic island lifestyle. The national tourism office offers an introduction through food. Seek local guidance on customs and ask permission before photographing people or ceremonies.

Laplap and local food traditions

Laplap is prepared with grated root crops and coconut cream, wrapped in leaves and cooked beneath hot stones. The official local-eats guide describes the tradition. Ingredients, preparation and customs belong to their local context; approach them as an opportunity to learn.

Human development, in context

HDI 0.621 · rank 146/193 · medium human development. UNDP 2025 report, using 2023 data.

Use a national indicator as background, not a personal forecast. Investigate the healthcare, education and everyday services relevant to your own household before deciding where to live.

Travel is not the same as residence

Treat three questions separately: visiting this country with your current passport; travelling elsewhere with a passport issued after citizenship; and permission to live or work somewhere. Check destination-government requirements for your nationality, purpose and travel dates. This portrait makes no aggregate visa-free count or promise of entry, employment or citizenship. The EU Council ended Vanuatu’s visa exemption in December 2024; do not rely on older passport-access marketing.
